We had a guest on the show this week, plus a lengthy segment on campaign reporting, so we saved a couple notes for the newsletter.
Charles Booker made an announcement about the Louisville mayoral election to announce…he’s not running for mayor. Booker has been more active on social media lately and made a video in late September that sounded prettty campaign-y if you ask me. People began speculating on a mayoral run, but Booker put that to bed in a statement on Monday; however, he mentioned that people like Councilwoman Shameka Parrish Wright understand the commitment to the work and want to run for mayor. So it seems like she’s running again and Booker is supporting her? I don’t know anymore!
A special election is upon us! Gary Clemons, a local union president, was selected as the Democratic nominee for the special election in State Senate District 37. David Yates vacated the seat when he was appointed Jefferson County Clerk. Calvin Leach received the Republican nomination. He ran against Yates in the 2024 election.
On Saturday, cities across Kentucky took part in No Kings protests, one of the largest single-day demonstrations in American history. Pessimists would say peaceful demonstrations like this don’t make a difference, and while it’s true that we may not see immediate impact, I was thrilled to see people show up. Fascism and dictatorships thrive in despair and apathy and what I saw Saturday was joyful resistance. Crowds brought quippy signs, wore costumes, danced, sang, but of course, spoke out against the actions of Trump. One of our very longtime friends of the pod (and guest writer of our earliest iteration of a newsletter!), Chris Hughes, was at the protest in Louisville capturing photos, and we thought we’d share them here.

I spy our friends U.S. Rep. Morgan McGarvey, Sen. Gerald Neal, and the UAW in there!
No kings since 1776,
